The Cement Association of Canada (CAC) partnered with Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) to prepare a summary of 10 case studies of innovation and collaboration in the concrete sector supported by ERA and the TIER fund over the past 10 years.
Together, these projects show how Canadian innovation and entrepreneurs are addressing most, if not all, emissions reduction pathways and exemplify the technology leadership of Canada’s heavy industry. Highlighted projects include Heidelberg Materials’ first full-scale CCUS solution, which will be hosted at its Edmonton cement plant; ZS2 Technologies’ next-generation cement production method to produce magnesium-based cement; and Carbon Corp’s electrolytic cement production process.
CAC’s Concrete Zero Roadmap calls on the sector to reduce emissions by up to 40% by 2030, 67% by 2040, and achieve complete net zero by 2050 across the five C’s of concrete emissions management: clinker, cement, concrete, construction, and carbon uptake. Through the TIER fund, ERA has supported $70 million in technology deployment across the five C’s that are now being implemented and scaled up in Alberta and a total of >2.2 MtCO2e in direct emissions reductions.
